Craving space and light our client set the brief of opening up the back of their existing detached house with the insertion of a contemporary ground floor and basement - the full-height glazing and double-height void with curved staircase certainly achieved that goal, with a bridge adding drama and providing access directly to the garden. This ambitious project was completed in July 2021, overcoming significant obstacles (including; retained elements of existing building, close proximity to neighbouring properties, a huge Cypress tree in the front garden and product shortage/price rises resulting from the double whammy of Brexit and a global pandemic) though constant collaboration by the diverse team. Mr & Mrs K are now happily settled into the spacious living areas which have become the nucleus of their family home. Basement and ground floors are seamlessly interwoven by three connecting areas via the – internal stair, bridge and external stair, all finished in a continuation of the same porcelain tile and smooth metal cladding which trace the geometric planes of the envelope. Enhancing daylight further is a generous aperture through the oversailing canopy, allowing sun to play across the south facing rooms as the day passes.
